Frequently Asked Questions about Ceramic Coatings

  • Do Gyeon Ceramic Coatings have 9H Hardness?

Yes, Gyeon ceramic coatings do have a 9H hardness rating, which is a key indicator of their outstanding protection and durability.

The Mohs hardness scale is an important industry standard test used to measure the scratch resistance of automotive coatings. On this scale, a 9H rating places Gyeon formulas on par with other top-shelf ceramic solutions and nanomaterials like sapphire crystal or corundum gemstones.

In fact, independent lab tests commissioned by Gyeon and reported on on their various ceramic formulations achieving the maximum possible 9H score.

  • How does ceramic coating work?

Ceramic coatings create an invisible barrier on your car's paint that repels water and dirt. When applied, the coating bonds tightly to the surface at a molecular level.

As it dries, special ceramic particles cross-link together to form a very hard, glass-like layer. Now water beads up on your paint instead of sticking. Dirt also doesn't adhere well.

This self-cleaning effect is thanks to the smooth ceramic layer. It's also highly resistant to scratches, acid rain, and UV rays that cause fading over time.

With regular washing, the beading action lets water and dirt easily roll off your coated paint. Without it, they could dull your finish.

Properly maintained, a ceramic shield keeps your new car looking its best for years. Just monthly washing sustains its beading abilities versus frequent waxing needed otherwise.

So in short, a bonded ceramic coating allows water and dirt to simply not stick to your paint, making it much easier to keep beautifully clean and protected long-term.

  • What doesn't ceramic coating do?

Here are some things that ceramic coating does not do:

    • Prevent all paint damage - While very scratch resistant, ceramic coatings may not withstand deep scratches or chips to the clearcoat from impacts.
    • Eliminate the need for washing - The hydrophobic effect just makes washing easier by allowing water to bead up and roll off. Routine maintenance washes are still needed to remove contaminants.
    • Permanently bond to every surface - Very porous or uneven surfaces may not allow for a uniform bonded coating layer, diminishing effectiveness over time in those areas.
    • Seal against moisture ingress - Ceramic won't prevent rust if water penetration through other means like body damage is occurring.
    • Cover up existing defects - Coatings will not fill in swirls, scratches or other paint imperfections present before application.
  • Can ceramic coating be used on plastic surfaces on my car?

Yes, ceramic coatings can effectively be applied to many plastic surfaces both inside and outside the vehicle. Some plastics actually benefit more from a coating than paint does.

  • How durable are ceramic coatings?

On average, high-quality ceramic coatings can last 3-5 years with proper maintenance. Some advanced professional coatings claim over 10 years of protection. Durability depends on environmental conditions, washing techniques, and other care factors.

  • How often should I wash a coated car?

Most experts recommend washing coated vehicles every 1-3 weeks to rinse away contaminants before they bond. Avoid automatic car washes which can swirl the paint. pH-neutral soap is gentler.
